Common questions

How much does Wortschatz cost?

Wortschatz is free. All learning tools, quizzes, flashcards and grammar tools are available without a paid plan.

Is Wortschatz an app? Do I need to download it?

No download needed. It’s a web app that runs in your browser on phone, tablet and computer. To use it like an app, add it to your home screen (Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone).

Do I need an account?

Without signing in: Adaptive Quiz with automatic reviews, flashcards and all grammar tools. Quiz progress is saved in this browser only. With Apple or Google sign-in: progress syncs across devices. Rush Mode and manually started Learning Profile reviews also require sign-in.

Which levels does it cover?

A1, A2 and B1. Flashcards can be filtered by level. The grammar tools cover articles, tenses and separable verbs, with example sentences.

How many words are included?

7,180 words across A1–B1 and 21 topics, each with a difficulty rating from 1 to 10 within its level.

Which languages can I learn with?

The interface is available in German, English, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Persian and Arabic. German vocabulary comes with translations into English, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Persian and Arabic.

Does Wortschatz use spaced repetition?

Yes. Words you practice come back for review at growing intervals: after 1 day, then 3, 7, 14, 30 and up to 60 days when you answer correctly in due reviews. A mistake brings the word back sooner. After the initial level assessment, three completed quizzes make your next Adaptive Quiz a 10-word review that prioritizes due words.

How can I practice der, die, das?

The Articles tool lets you pick a word and see its article in everyday example sentences. You can also filter flashcards by article.

How is Wortschatz different from Anki, Quizlet or Duolingo?

Anki and Quizlet are general flashcard tools where you can create your own decks or use existing ones. Duolingo offers broader, game-like language courses with short lessons covering skills such as speaking and listening. Wortschatz focuses on German vocabulary and grammar for A1–B1: it comes with a ready, level-sorted word list, adaptive quizzes with spaced repetition and interactive grammar tools, so you can start without building a deck. It works well alongside a course or an app like Duolingo.

Can I create custom vocabulary decks?

Not at the moment. Practice and flashcards use Wortschatz’s own curated word list. Flashcards can be filtered by level, difficulty, word type, article and topic.

Where does the vocabulary come from?

The word list was compiled and curated by Wortschatz and organized by CEFR-oriented levels A1–B1. Level assignments and the 1–10 difficulty ratings are Wortschatz’s own editorial decisions, not an official CEFR word list.

What data does sign-in store?

Your learning progress is saved with your account so it can sync across devices. Authentication also stores account information, such as your account ID and the email address supplied by Apple or Google. Signing in does not give Wortschatz your Apple or Google password.
